vintage Speedweeks...part 3
as early as 1903, (nearly 50 Years before there was a Daytona Race) racers flocked to Daytona to test man and machine...the hard-packed long stretches of Ormond Beach were perfect for Land Speed Records and became the standard until the more wide open spaces and longer stretches of the Bonneville Salt Flats became in favor...the test was the "Measured Mile"...the Measured Mile was actually a three mile run, Two miles to get your speed up and the third mile was timed...the Measured Mile was also the yardstick used to qualify the Stock Cars for the Daytona Beach Race of the 1950s...
