Vintage Snap...

Norman Batten from East Orange, New Jersey guiding his blazing car in the 1927 Indianapolis 500 away from the other racers and grandstands and was badly burned but returned to race after. Considered one of the most heroic acts in the 500 history. He and fellow driver Earl Devore died at sea the following year while sailing aboard the ocean liner SS Vestris when it sank. Devore is credited with saving the lives of his wife, his son, and Batten's wife November 12, 1928...
